Lamborghini Roaring Away from Fully Gas-Powered Cars

Lamborghini will soon stop making cars powered only by gasoline. The company is famous for its Italian sports cars. Now, it has announced its new cars will be hybrids. 

The newest Lamborghini will still have the looks of the well-known sports car. The car will also still have a powerful 12-cylinder engine. It will still "roar." The car will accelerate super quickly. The move comes as the Volkswagen AG brand plans to go fully electric by the second half of the 2020s.

Lamborghini follows other so-called “supercars” in the race to create hybrids. Ferrari has already made hybrids. On Tuesday, British sports car maker Lotus showed its last fully gas-powered car. It said all future models will be electric vehicles (EVs). Earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz introduced its first EV. The company says it can travel 620 miles on a single charge. 

The car makers' move to hybrids or EVs comes as nations across the world begin to move toward all-electric vehicles. They're doing so to cut the carbon emissions that fuel climate change. 

In November, President Biden set a target that half of all US vehicles be powered by electricity by 2030. That's part of a strategy to phase out sales of new gas-powered vehicles. But the US is still behind many other countries. They include Germany, the UK, Canada, Israel, and Japan. Those nations have passed laws or rules that ban the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035.
